Ruth’s New Article in Nurse Leader
| Why Nurses Still Must Learn to Delegate |
| NurseLeader has just published Ruth Hansten’s article titled Why Nurses Still Must Learn to Delegate in their October 2008 edition.
Delegation is a critical skill for nurses. Yet many nurse leaders can trace their delegation skills back to on-the-job training or trial and error. With today’s staffing shortages, it’s becoming increasingly important to ensure that nurses are comfortable in delegating to assistive personnel. In this article Ruth correlates the Relationship and Results Oriented HealthcareTM best practices to the nursing skills of delegation, supervision, and teamwork. Citing the related field research and current literature, this article reveals how these best practices are absolutely essential to improvements in nursing practice.
RROHCTM organizations that are planning for Magnet status and implementing evidence based practice will discover reinforcement of the RROHCTM best practices in this article.

I agree that many nurses still need to learn delegation skills. When a nurse is consistently running behind it stronly relates to delegation skills or the lack thereof. I have heard nurse’s say, that the are not comfortable with telling grown individuals what to do. They feel that everyone should know their jobs and do what they have to do. I believe that there should be more focus on delegation skillls. It is not about telling someone to so do task . We have to be aware of how we approach the individual, what information or instructions we provide to them and know that it is our responsibility to follow up. I really enjoyed Ruth’s book on Clinical Delegation Skills. Recently I shared this book with a new nurse who was struggling with delegating. She found it very insightful and helpful . It is vey important that nurse’s learn how to delegate effectively.
